In Cagliari, triumph of the wide field with Massimo Zedda: “Following Matteotti and Berlinguer”

The leader of the Progressives wins by a landslide in the first round, the third time for him at Palazzo Bacaredda

CAGLIARI – The first thanks goes to the citizens of Cagliari, but then Massimo Zedda, new mayor of the Sardinian capital, wanted to remember in his first outing as mayor two totems of the left, Enrico Berlinguer and Giacomo Matteotti. He did so in front of supporters and reporters at the headquarters of the Cagliari Democratic Party, in a crowded press conference, called in the late afternoon after the “almost” official victory in the first round (the complete counting of the sections will arrive in late evening, but the gap separating him from the centre-right challenger, Alessandra Zedda, is now too wide). An appetizer, the one in the Berlinguer club in Via Emilia, of the big party in Piazza Garibaldi, where Zedda will receive the embrace of the whole city (and where the arrival of the President of the Region, Alessandra Todde, is also expected).
“This was a tough electoral campaign with firm tones – the words of Massimo Zedda amidst applause – but extremely correct. There was no lapse in style, no political brawl, which is one of the things that keeps citizens from voting. For this I thank the candidates Alessandra Zedda, Giuseppe Farris, Claudia Ortu and Emanuela Rope”. So the memory of Matteotti and Berlinguer: “With the modesty that distinguishes us, but also with the ideals that we hold firmly, we think that their witness, not without a load of difficulties, today it is transferred to us. We must follow the principles and values of people who even sacrificed their lives for their ideals”.
