BOLOGNA – “I know I am on the right side of history. If I am elected I will ensure that those who find themselves in situations of injustice like lamia are not left alone“. Salis, who together with other activists is accused of the beating of two far-right militants, feels “victim of an injustice” and demands a “trial in which my fundamental rights are guaranteed “. In the interview published this morning by La Stampa, Ilaria Salis talks about the choice to run for the European elections: “I want to transform this story of mine into something constructive not only for me. I would like to be able to dedicate myself to something that is very important to me heart: the protection of human rights“. Isn’t this a way to escape the trial and have immunity? “My judicial situation cannot and must not be jeopardized or aggravated by my political positions.” And again: “It is not my intention to escape, but to defend myself within a process in which fundamental rights, the principle of proportionality and the presumption of innocence are guaranteed”.

Ilaria Salis talks about a Europe that is moving to the right, but prefers not to answer questions about the Italian government and what it has done about her situation. Just as he does not respond to the closeness between the majority parties and the Hungarian Prime Minister Orban. Instead, she wants to say that, if she is elected to the European Parliament, she will deal with prison and detention conditions: “If I am elected I will ensure that those who find themselves in situations of injustice like lamia are not left alone. I think it is important give visibility and voice to the world of prisons. The forgotten world in which men and women live and die, in a relationship considered as a foreign body and not part of society : the protection of fundamental human rights. I want to dedicate myself to supporting men, women and children who are victims of injustice, exploitation, violence, war, poverty and discrimination”.

Before saying that the first thing he will do upon leaving prison will be “hug the people I love” and “eat a pizza”, Salis spends a few words on the mobilization of students and universities for Gaza. “As a teacher I believe that a person’s education does not end with studying. It is essential that children get used to reflecting on the world around them. In an era in which the planet and society are changing more rapidly than ever, contribution of young people and their political participation are particularly valuable”.
