LA SALLE (AOSTA) – The mountains were his life, ski mountaineering his passion. This is how Denis Trento, a highly decorated ski mountaineering athlete, died in his mountains, in La Salle. The family did not see him return from a skin trip. The Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue intervened in the afternoon on the Tête-de-Paramont, above La Salle, to look for him. The Civil Protection helicopter spotted him at the base of the north face. The crew doctor declared the death. Trento was well known in the Aosta Valley and in the world of ski mountaineering. Among the many races, he won the Mezzalama Trophy in 2009 with Manfred Reichegger and Matteo Eydallin.
An athlete at the Army Sports Center, Trento was a skier, mountaineer, mountain guide and a great lover of snow and mountains. He spent a lifetime on Mont Blanc, the massif on which he climbed dozens of routes. In ski mountaineering he has collected numerous successes and prestigious podiums, including a third place in the 2007 Mezzalama and a second place in the 2009 Pierra Menta, as well as winning the European and world team titles.
The president of the Valle d’Aosta Region, Renzo Testolin, and the regional councilor for Tourism and Sport, Giulio Grosjacques, express their condolences for “a great man of the mountains, who was able to represent our region and the colors of army with absolute passion and dedication, excelling in ski mountaineering”. Trento was “also a fine example of life and human as well as sporting values. He deserves the recognition of the sporting world and of all the Aosta Valley people who knew him for having contributed to the appreciation of the passion for the mountains and for sport in general”. Trento leaves behind his wife and three children.
