It was one of the most serious attacks of black terrorism in republican Italy. 9 people died and more than 100 were injured
BOLOGNA – At 10.12 the clock chimes: eight chimes like the number of people who died 50 years ago. Today we remember with a commemoration ceremony the massacre in Piazza Loggia in Brescia, which occurred on 28 May 1974. It was one of the most serious attacks of black terrorism in republican Italy. The toll from the attack was 9 people killed and 102 injured. A bomb hidden in a bin was detonated while a trade union demonstration against terrorism was underway.
The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will be in Brescia this morning for the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Piazza massacre. The poster of today’s celebrations, “neo-fascist massacre, yet to be told”, reports a schedule of events that will follow from morning until evening. In the afternoon the commemoration will be held at the Chamber of Deputies.
President Mattarella is the third head of state to go to Brescia for the anniversary of the massacre, after Sandro Pertini in 1982 and Oscar Luigi Scalfaro in 1994. After the 8 tolls and the minute of silence dedicated to the victims, as many tolls will be rung by the bells of the parishes of Brescia, before the speech from the square by the secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini.
The program for May 28th is part of the large program of initiatives organized for the 50th anniversary by the “Casa della Memoria di Brescia“, an association created by the families of the victims of the Piazza della Loggia massacre .
