ROME – Polls open in the Netherlands, the first EU country to vote for the renewal of the European Parliament. The vote, the Euronews broadcaster reminds us, will take place on just one day. Tomorrow it will be the turn of Ireland and the Czech Republic. On Saturday it will be the turn of Latvia, Malta, Slovakia and Italy, where the polls will also remain open on Sunday. Voting will also be possible on Sunday in all other countries.
About 373 million eligible people involved, with different rules and systems, from preferences to thresholds and the minimum age for participation, which in four Member States is 16.
The results of the consultations will be made known only on Sunday night, after polls have closed in all 27 EU countries.
In the Netherlands, the Freedom Party, Partij voor de Vrijheid, led by Geert Wilders, is the favourite, having emerged as the majority force in the legislative elections six months ago.
