BARI – Giorgia Meloni allows herself a selfie with the photographers, while President Joe Biden is kept waiting a bit. When the president of the United States arrives, wearing a blue suit and sunglasses, the prime minister welcomes him with a handshake and an exchange of words. Then the signing of the guest book, the inevitable group photo of the leaders and off we go, with the G7 summit in Borgo Egnazia, in Puglia.
“G7 IS NOT A CLOSED FORTRESS THAT MUST DEFEND ITSELF”
“Enhance what unites us and strengthen our collaboration”. But also “knowing how to dialogue with everyone” because “the G7 is not a fortress closed in on itself that must defend itself from someone”. These are the objectives of the Italian presidency of the G7, illustrated by Prime Minister Meloni in her speech marking the opening of the proceedings. That of the seven great countries of the world, says Meloni, “is an offer of values that we open to the world with the aim of shared development”.
“I am sure that in these two days we will be able to carry out a discussion that will be able to deliver concrete and measurable results“, says the Italian prime minister.
“PRIDE TO HOST YOU, ENJOY OUR HOSPITALITY“
“It is a pride for us to host you. It is for the whole of Italy and I hope that in these two days, despite working very hard, you will also be able to savor a bit of the hospitality for which Italy is famous in the world”, he adds, referring to the leaders who were protagonists but also guests in Borgo Egnazia.
“FROM UKRAINE TO MO AND AFRICA, DENSE PROGRAM”
The G7 program in Borgo Egnazia “has become quite dense: we will obviously talk about the ongoing crises starting from Ukraine and the Middle East” to get to “the one that is probably the most complex challenge of our time, that is, the advent of generative artificial intelligence” to “seize the opportunities while managing the risks”. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues in her opening speech at the G7 meeting.
“We will return to the importance of our greater attention to the Indo-Pacific region“, explains the Prime Minister again which announces “ample space for another continent that is fundamental for the future of all of us, Africa, with its difficulties and opportunities. It asks us for a different approach than what we have often demonstrated in the past “.
“MIGRATION A FUNDAMENTAL ISSUE PUT AT THE CENTER BY ITALY”
“Not only that, Africa is linked to another fundamental issue that Italy has placed at the center of the presidency”, namely “the question of migration – explains the Italian prime minister – and the increasingly worrying role that trafficking organizations are taking on by exploiting the desperation of human beings”.
“THE CHOICE TO HOST THE SUMMIT IN PUGLIA, A BRIDGE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST, IS NOT CASUAL”
The choice of Puglia as the location for the G7 “was not accidental: we did it because Puglia is a region in Southern Italy and the message we want to give is of a G7 that under the Italian presidency wants to r strengthen its dialogue with the nations of the Global South“. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says this, opening the work of the G7, from the Apulian location.
“We did it because this land is historically a bridge between the West and the East. It is a land of dialogue at the center of theMediterranean strong>, of that middle sea that connects the two great maritime spaces of the globe, that is, the Atlantic on one side and the Indo-Pacific on the other”, adds the Prime Minister.

“G7 HAS AN IRREPLACEABLE ROLE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GLOBAL CRISIS”
The leaders of the planet’s leaders “in recent decades have taken on an irreplaceable role in the management of global crises and in particular those that jeopardize our freedom and our democracies”. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues, opening the work of the G7.
“It is a double honor for me to welcome you both in my capacity as Prime Minister of the Italian Republic and in my capacity as President of the Group of Seven. It is the seventh time that Italy has the responsibility of leading this forumwhich will be 50 years old in 2025″, adds Meloni.
And like any self-respecting G7, the ritual group photo cannot be missing: “Welcome to Italy“, writes Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on X posting the photo taken this morning with the other G7 leaders before the start of the Borgo Egnazia summit
