G7, Mattarella: “The global scenario has changed, ancient ghosts are resurfacing”

This is what the President of the Republic said during the toast on the occasion of the lunch offered at the G7 Leaders' Summit at the Castello Svevo in the city of Brindisi

ROME – “Ladies and Gentlemen Heads of State and Government, Distinguished participants, it is a pleasure for me to welcome you. Compared to the G7 meeting that the Italian Republic chaired seven years ago, in Taormina, the international context has changed profoundly. Today we see that the growing process of interdependence promoted by globalization has abruptly disappeared, together with the drive towards globally shared values and objectives. Ancient ghosts and the language of cooperation and construction have reappeared of international rules of coexistence that respect peoples, is being put to the test, giving way to growing geopolitical tensions, if, unfortunately, not to conflicts”. This is what the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella said during the toast on the occasion of the lunch offered at the G7 Leaders’ Summit at the Castello Svevo in the city of Brindisi.

PROMOTING PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT AGAINST NEO-IMPERIALISM

“The ambition of new actors to play a more prominent role challenges the ability of the international community – and within it of the G7 – to promote positive processes oriented towards peace and development. For some it is a question of proceeding with implementation anyway – often in a frantic way – of new international arrangements, in the presumption that they will be more advantageous for themselves than those achieved in the decades that followed the Second World War while, instead, they often open up spaces for > pitfalls of neo-colonialism if not neo-imperialism“, continued the President of the Republic.

WORRYING INCREASE IN AUTHORITARIAN INSTITUTIONS

“The States represented at this table recognize themselves in the principles of the rule of law, of democracy, of respect for the rights of the individual, of international cooperation. Considerations that are anything but obvious, if we consider the worrying increase in authoritarian impulses in many parts of the world, with the resulting consequences: compression of the inviolable sphere of the person at the internal level and aggressive conduct in the international sphere”.
