From Lucerne Premier Meloni to Zelensky: “You can continue to count on Italy”

At the Peace Summit he applauds the initiative of the Ukrainian president and reassures him: "We are not backing down". As demonstrated at the recently concluded G7

BARI – “Defending Ukraine means defending that system of rules that holds the international community together and protects every nation. If Ukraine had not been able to count on our support and therefore had been forced to surrender, we would not be here today to discuss the minimum conditions for negotiations”. The Prime Minister, Giorgia Melon, says this in her speech at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine underway in Switzerland near Lucerne. Without this support, adds Meloni, “it would only be a question of discussing the invasion of a sovereign state and we can all imagine the consequences”.

Peace does not mean surrender – as PresidentPutin seems to suggest with his latest statements. This is not the case. Confusing peace with submission would set a dangerous precedent for everyone”, continues the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. The Peace Conference, according to the Prime Minister, represents “a courageous initiative, which dismantles certain narratives or propaganda. No one can doubt the absolute importance of the three crucial issues of global interest discussed today: security nuclear, food security and the human dimension, in particular the return of displaced children. They are important for all of us and I think, also based on today’s discussion, that we can build a lot from here.”

Italy, insists Meloni, “has always done its part, and does not intend to back down. However, we must unite all possible efforts to help Ukraine look to the future. This is exactly what we did attheG7 summitunder the Italian presidency, where we have just reached an agreement to make available to Kiev approximately 50 billion dollars of further financial support by the end of the year, taking advantage of the extraordinary revenues deriving from immobilized Russian sovereign assets”.
According to the Prime Minister “this is an extremely significant result, the result of a great team work carried out by the G7 leaders”.
