From Bill Clinton to Donald Trump, from Fidel Castro to Silvio Berlusconi: when sex is power
Journey into history and the stories of the relationship between two of the main drivers of the world and of the life of human beings... and of rulers
ROME – Donald Trump is the first President in the history of the United States – in truth, currently former with the declared aim of moving the residence back to the White House – to have been found guilty of a crime during a trial. It’s a fact. Donald Trump is not the first Head of State and/or Government to be involved in a sex-related scandal. This is also a fact. For Gramsci “in the beginning it was the verb. No, in the beginning it was sex” the true engine of the world. Indeed, going back through history, it would be difficult to count all the rulers who have sinned of lust, borrowing this expression from Catholic culture which, in the West and therefore also in the USA, is still predominant. It doesn’t matter whether it is driven by feelings or pure desire. What matters, rather, is that sex and power declines, almost always inexorably, into sex is power. Many choices, some decisive for the fate of an entire country or a community of people, are linked to love, no matter whether it is understood as an action or movement of the soul. From history books to literature books, from Anthony and Cleopatrato Greek mythology with Helen of Sparta who became Helen of Troy (term, between the other, today used as a terrible sexist epithet against women), the previous ones are really too many. We need to mention just a few, more recent and in some ways, closer to us.
BILL CLINTON AND MONICA LEWINSKY
“I made a mistake and was globally humiliated in the first scandal of the internet age.” The Sexgate of the 20th century is undoubtedly linked to the extramarital affair between the 42nd president of the United States of America, Bill Clinton, and Monica Leweinsky. A scandal that reached the accusation of Impeachment in 1998 (but already in 1996 a photo showed them embracing at a party). After more than 25 years, the then intern in the legislative office of the White House sees her former self in this way: “At the age of 22 I fell in love with the boss, shortly after I realized the devastating consequences of this.” Clinton defined her as the “queen of oral sex”, she says she was “subjected to media pillory”, with the diffusion of the photos and conversations with the former President. From that experience, however, an American Crime History series was born , of which she is co-producer. It’s called, coincidentally, Impeachment.
BERLUSCONI AND…
Ruby “Mubarak’s granddaughter”, the Olgettine, the elegant dinners in Arcore, the “bus of sluts” as a production bonus for the employees (a word which, coincidentally, returns), the sexist jokes but above all Noemi Letizia, the young woman from Casoria whom the Prime Minister in office visited on her 18th birthday. Trials, scandals, betrayals, wiretaps, well-known names and faces from television and politics. A separate article would be needed to talk about the relationship between Berlusconi, women and power. An eternal ‘ménage à trois’ of which he was never ashamed, on the contrary, he always showed his passion for female beauty with brazen pride. A love that had a significant impact on his public, political and entrepreneurial life.
