ROME – Benito Nonino, the ‘Lord of grappa’ who transformed this liqueur into a refined product, has died. He was 90 years old and passed away in his home in Percoto, in the province of Udine where he was born on 6 February 1934. Passionate about the distillery business since he was a child, in 1973 he created the first grappa ‘Monovitigno Picolit’. Together with his wife Giannola he made his distillery company famous all over the world, so much so that he created the Nonino Prize (1975), intended for personalities who have distinguished themselves in enhancing rural culture and civilization. The company is managed by their three daughters, Antonella, Cristina and Elisabetta, together with some nieces.
