ROME – To the reassurances of the Foreign Minister Tajani – “We will not send an Italian soldier to Ukraine and weapons are used in Ukraine” – followed the invitation to prudence (or rather the clear closure) of the Premier Meloni, but the pressure of the NATO general secretary, Jens Stoltenberg, to go further in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, has achieved the – historical – objective of bringing all Italian politics into agreement: government, majority and opposition . So much so that the League even announced an agenda or a question to censor the Norwegian politician’s “war words”.

“The League – the party says – is ready to file an agenda or a question aimed at censoring the war words of the general secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg” and the first signatory will be Claudio Borghi . A few hours before the announcement of his party, the secretary Matteo Salvini even launched an ultimatum to Stoltenberg from an electoral appointment in Naples: “Either he recants or he apologizes or he resigns”, because “to talk about war, about using bombs or missiles or Italian weapons that we sent to Ukraine to defend itself on its territory – he says – it can do it not in my name, not in the name of the League, not in the name of the Italian people”.
From Forza Italia, Deborah Bergamini, deputy secretary and head of the party’s Foreign Department, issued a warning: “In a complex scenario like that of the conflict in Ukraine, the Western bloc of which NATO is in expression party cannot afford divisions”. For this reason, “solo accelerations such as that of the Secretary of the Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg are imprudent and counterproductive – he underlines – because they impact on choices adopted by national governments”.
From the opposition, the Avs MEP Massimiliano Smeriglio expresses great concern: “Stoltenberg, whose mandate is expiring, is working on a hypothesis which for me is terrible – he remarks – because it is a further escalation and puts us in a position to objectively become co-belligerents”.
Against the tide Graham Watson, leader of the United States of Europe in the North East constituency,
during an electoral meeting in Bologna who invites us to “speak seriously about Ukraine”. And above all:
“We know that Stoltenberg is right – he claims – but no one has the courage to admit it, we must continue to defend the country attacked by Russia without hypocrisy”.
You see the pros and cons of the words of the NATO Secretary insteadVincenzo Camporini, former chief of staff of the Defense and Action’s candidate for the European elections in the Center constituency. “From an institutional point of view – he begins – those who, like Minister Crosetto, maintain that the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance is not its political and military leader, but only its spokesperson, are not wrong and that therefore a proposal of this type should not be anticipated before being discussed by of NATO member countries”. But “from a political and military point of view, the lifting of this ban would be perfectly compliant and consistent with the line adopted by Ukraine’s allied countries – he highlights – that is, with support for operations of an exclusively defensive nature. Hitting military targets on Russian territory, that is, the bases from which attacks on the civilian population start throughout Ukrainian territory, is one hundred percent a defense activity by the Kyiv forces and would allow – adds Camporini – to more effectively pursue the dual objective of reducing the number of civilian casualties and to limit Russia’s offensive potential.”
The Minister of DefenseGuido Crosetto puts an end to the hypothesis launched by the NATO secretary: “There is no NATO secretary or a nation that decides the line for all the others”, he says the minister, who extends the dig from Stoltenberg to Macron “when he said ‘we will send our soldiers to Ukraine”. And again: “If a decision must be taken within NATO – Crosetto clarifies once and for all – it will not be before next July, when there will be the summit in Washington «bringing projects, plans and ideas. Individual pushes are worth little “.
