Europeans, the sky is increasingly ‘Giorgia’, then Sgarbi’s goats

In Piazza del Popolo in Rome, the FdI demonstration to close the electoral campaign

ROME – “President De Luca, I’m that bitch Meloni”, blare the loudspeakers. All around, however, it presents itself as “Giorgia”. The leader’s name is everywhere in Piazza del Popolo. On stage it is reproduced in large letters: below, in the centre, on the sides. Against the blue background it looks like a trompe-l’oeil: the eye gets confused trying to count how many “with Giorgia” there are. Meanwhile, in the background, Rino Gaetano sings, ‘But the sky is always bluer’. Tomorrow is the anniversary of his death and in Rome, as always, people dance and play in his memory. On stage, meanwhile, the sky is increasingly Giorgia. It’s hot in Piazza del Popolo, a lady collapses in the middle of the speech by Giorgia Meloni who speaks for a precise hour. Us and them, the speech is all about underlining the difference between FdI and the others, in particular the Democratic Party and its secretary. “Answer Elly – Meloni shouts from the stage at a certain point – don’t run away: am I an undemocratic leader in your opinion?”.

Listening to “Giorgia” there is a square half full, or empty. The glance is guaranteed by the many flags: tricolor or blue, but of FdI, not of Europe. The young people of the National Youth party parade from the Pincio to the square, carrying the banners of satire: the big faces of Schlein, Lucia Annunziata, Corrado Formigli, Fabio Fazio and Luciana Littizzetto: “Even if she feels bad about it you write Giorgia”. Among the first to arrive is the Northern League deputy Antonio Angelucci. He is driving a BMW sedan that parks in front of the Leonardo Da Vinci museum, a few meters from the Porta del Popolo. Very lucky to find a place there. He then walks to the barrier under the stage, he is in the front row. Why are you here in Rome and not in Milan, at the rally of the secretary of the League Salvini? Maybe he changes sides? “No, no. I couldn’t go to Milan – he replies – I have the witch’s stroke”.

Minister Adolfo Urso is then seen in the square, taking a selfie with the militants. Below the stage is the president of the Senate Ignazio La Russa: “I am one of the people”, he claims. The Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio has one of the caps that were snapped up on his head: “Italian pride”, it says. Lollobrigida and Sangiuliano can be glimpsed.
A flag of Romania appears, then one of Albania. There are two Sikhs who came from Brescia to wave the FdI flags. In the front row, under a scorching sun, two men who have imprinted their political love on their bodies. The youngest has Silvio Berlusconi’s autograph tattooed on his forearm, the other has Giorgia Meloni’s between his chest and shoulder. “We win and we will win!”, suddenly shouts a man in the crowd.
At the end of the rally, Giovanni Donzelli rejoices: “There were 30 thousand people listening to Giorgia”. In the background the music of Rino Gaetiano, ‘But the sky is always bluer’, ‘A mano a mano’. As the crowd flows away, Vittorio Sgarbi appears on stage. “Goat! Goat!”The militants shout at him affectionately. He doesn’t mind. Indeed, he smiles and plays his part: “Goats! Goats! Goats!”.
