European Parliament destination: who are the 76 newly elected “made in Italy”

In the "azzurri" team the big names of the preferences, such as general Roberto Vannacci, the mayor of Riace Mimmo Lucano, Antonio Decaro, Edy Tamajo. Here are all the names of those elected for each party

ROME – There are mayors of large and small cities, or those who have simply received confirmation of their office, but also new entries in the news, who have become a true flag for civil rights, such as Ilaria Salis , or those who need no introduction like Cecilia Strada. Women and men of the right, left, center, who will bring the colors of the Italian flag to Europe. Of the 705 elected in the European Union countries, 76 were those who obtained the “pass” to Brussels and Strasbourg from Italian voters between Saturday and Sunday 8 and 9 June. The elections that have just concluded were the tenth elections to the European Parliament.

The largest “teams” are those of the Brothers of Italy, with 25 men and women deputies, and the Democratic Party, with 21 elected representatives. The first Italian party, led by Giorgia Meloni, has won a number of European seats 5 times higher than the only 5 elected in 2019. The PD rises from 19 in the previous one EU electoral round with 21 seats. Boom for the Greens and Left Alliance which conquers 6 seats: it had none in 2019. Who came out reduced: the M5s, which drops from 14 seats to 8 compared to 2019 (even though, due to several departures, the Grillina team had already been reduced to 5 seats) and Lega which was the most represented Italian party in the European Chamber, with 28 MEPs, and now drops to 8 seats. Finally, 8 MEPs also for Forza Italia.

Among the best-known names, there is the anti-fascist militant Ilaria Salis, thanks to her 173 thousand personal votes, elected from the ranks of Avs, today under house arrest in Hungary, for which she awaits her release – and her return to Italy – as soon as she is proclaimed elected to the European Parliament. Still among the ranks of Avs, the most voted with 190 thousand preferences, is the mayor of Riace, Mimmo Lucano, elected again first citizen also in the Calabrian town, having already appeared in 40th place in the list of the most influential leaders dictated by the American Fortune magazine and known throughout the world for his “Riace model” of welcoming migrants. He comes from the Lega – even if he ran as an independent – the most voted in Italy: half a million preferences for General Roberto Vannacci. In the ranks of Forza Italia, among the most voted are the administrators from north to south Italy: Edy Tamajo, regional councilor for Productive Activities of the Sicily Region andLetizia Moratti< /strong>, councilor for Welfare and vice-president of the Lombardy Region. At 73 years old, the “veteran” Mario Mantovani is confirmed in Europe and as mayor of Arconate. Among the elected members of the M5s, the director of the newspaper “La notizia”, Gaetano Pedullà. For Fratelli d’Italia, the head of the list Carlo Fidanza, the MEP who ended up in the investigation – archived – on the black lobby for the use of European funds, was confirmed, and the 33 year old Giovanni Crosetto, nephew of the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto. Finally, the Pd enlists and brings to the Euro Chamber Cecilia Strada, “not only” daughter of Gino Strada, philanthropist, former president of the NGO Emergencye today active on sea rescue missions in the central Mediterranean, also as communications manager, for the Italian non-profit organization ResQ People Saving People. And always among the elected representatives of the Democratic Party, to name a few, there are the mayors of the provincial capitals –Antonio Decaro – with 490 thousand preferences – Giorgio Gori, Matteo Ricci, Dario Nardella strong>- and the Governor of Emilia Romagna Stefano Bonaccini, the journalists Lucia Annunziata and Sandro Ruotolo.

The list of 76, however, is not yet definitive: candidates proclaimed elected in multiple constituencies must declare to the national electoral office, within eight days of the last proclamation, which constituency they choose. In the absence of the option, the national electoral office proceeds by drawing lots. The president of the national electoral office then proclaims elected by subrogation the candidate who immediately follows the last person elected on the list of the constituency which has not been chosen or drawn by lot. The names of the elected candidates are made official by the national electoral office through publication in the Gazzetta.
