European elections, von der Leyen: “The center holds, a bulwark against extremists”

The president of the EU Commission: "the European People's Party has the majority, it is crucial for stability"

ROME – “There remains a majority at the center for a strong Europe and this is crucial for stability; in other words the center holds”: this was said by the president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on election night. The manager continued by indicating the objective of “establishing a bastion against left-wing and right-wing extremists”. The preliminary results of the European elections which ended yesterday in the 27 EU member countries indicate an advance of right-wing parties, first in France, Italy and Austria and second in Germany and the Netherlands.

According to these data, the political group with the relative majority in the EU Parliament will still remain the European People’s Party (EPP), to which von der Leyen refers. The manager, of German nationality, could now be a candidate for a new mandate at the helm of the EU executive. Socialist parties came first in Malta, Romania and Sweden. The European group of reference, that of the Socialists and Democrats, should be the second by number of seats in the EU Parliament.
