Endless rain on Emilia-Romagna: new disturbance arriving from France

Precipitation also in the form of thunderstorms moving, more intense and persistent in the areas of the central-western Apennine ridge

BOLOGNA – It continues to rain non-stop in Emilia-Romagna. And also for tomorrow, Friday 25 October, thunderstorms are expected all over the territory. For this reason, the regional Civil Protection has issued an orange alert, also linked to possible criticalities of the waterways.

In detail, tomorrow precipitations are expected, even in the form of thunderstorms – the bulletin states – moving from south to north, more intense and persistent in the areas of the central-western Apennine ridge”.

The rains, explain Civil Protection and Arpae, “could generate, in the current conditions of soil saturation, new increases in hydrometric levels in all the basins already affected by previous floods, with levels above threshold 2 or close to threshold 3 in the central sector of the region”.

“Landslides, runoff along the slopes and rapid increases in hydrometric levels in the minor network, more widespread in the central western sector, will also be possible”.

In the Bologna hill area, especially, already tested by the flooding of last Saturday, “the particular vulnerability of the slopes continues due to the intense rainfall of the previous days and of the urbanized areas and of the road network due to the presence of debris material”.

The orange alert concerns most of the Emilian provinces, both in the plains and on the reliefs. On the other hand, the plains and the low hills of Parma and Piacenza are considered yellow, but also the territories of Romagna (both the Riviera and the hilly and mountainous areas).

“The orange hydraulic criticality on the central-eastern Po river plains refers to the transit of the flood, in attenuation, with levels above the thresholds 2”, we finally read in the bulletin.

THE DISTURBANCE ARRIVING FROM FRANCE

A new low pressure area with associated disturbance of Atlantic origin, sliding from France onto the western Mediterranean basin, will cause widespread and persistent precipitation in the North-West regions, locally also in the form of showers or thunderstorms.

Based on available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection in agreement with the regions involved – which are responsible for activating civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions that integrates and extends the one issued yesterday. The weather phenomena, impacting the various areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities that are reported, in a national summary, in the national bulletin of criticalities and alerts available on the Department’s website (www.protezionecivile.gov.it).

The warning provides for scattered to widespread and locally persistent precipitation from the early hours of tomorrow, Friday 25 October, also in the form of showers or thunderstorms, not only in Emilia-Romagna, but also in Piedmont and Liguria.

The phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity and strong gusts of wind. Based on the forecasted and ongoing phenomena, an orange alert has been assessed for tomorrow, Friday 25 October, in eastern Liguria, large areas of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, and in south-western Veneto.

Yellow alert onUmbria, part of Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, western Liguria, as well as on large basins of Piedmont, south-eastern Lombardy and sectors of Veneto.
