ROME – The girl who was hit while leaving the nursery yesterday afternoon was called Sofia and was 18 months old.. The tragedy happened on the outskirts of Brescia at the ‘Little England’ bilingual institute in the Sant’Anna neighbourhood: from the first reconstructions, the little girl was in the school car park hand in hand with her 80-year-old grandmother and was hit by a reversing SUVdriven by another 74-year-old grandmother, who was picking up her elementary school grandson.Sofia hit her head on the ground on impactlosing a lot of blood. The little girl, according to what we read in the local newspapers, was rescued in very serious conditions, found in cardiac arrest, hospitalized with direct resuscitation maneuvers and urgently transferred, under code red, to the Pediatric Department of the Civil of Brescia, but unfortunately she did not survive and died shortly after arriving in the emergency room. Sofia’s grandmother was also hospitalized in shock and with some suspected fractures.
According to what the Corriere reports: “It seems that the car park was full and that the lady had stopped in a point reserved for disabled people and remained on board, ready to move if someone arrived. Then she she would have noticed a free place. And she would have tried to reach it after moving in reverse, then a left turn and another maneuver, the fatal one: perhaps the automatic gearbox and the agitation of the moment could having led her into error, these are the first hypotheses”.
The Prosecutor’s Office has opened a case and investigations are underway because the woman who hit Sofia and her grandmother is now under investigation for vehicular homicide. In addition to the witnesses, investigators are also examining two surveillance cameras that filmed the terrible tragedy.
