Deaths in Bologna factory, friend of a victim: “You can’t die like this”

"We had been friends for 15 years, since high school," says a friend and colleague of Fabio Tosi, one of the two workers killed yesterday in the Toyota explosion. Yesterday he left early, today he says: "These are things you don't think could happen in your workplace"

BOLOGNA – “You can’t die so young“. This is said with a voice broken by emotion by one of the workers of Toyota Handling in Bologna, a close friend of Fabio Tosi, one of the two victims of yesterday afternoon’s explosion in the plant in the Bargellino industrial area. “We had been friends for 15 years, since high school“, he says after leaving, like many others, a bouquet of flowers next to the company’s entrance gate. “We had made Aldini together – he continues – even if at two different addresses. I was one of those who insisted on taking him in here, when he was looking for work. We worked together here, he was my superior“. Several, after leaving the flowers, avoid the cameras and microphones. Others, however, agree to talk. “I’ve known them for years,” says a Toyota Handling employee, “one of them was expecting a baby. So it’s even more dramatic. We had also done other things together besides work, like courses. It doesn’t seem real to me.”

Yesterday, the worker specifies, “I left early for leave, my wife warned me with a message. I am absolutely incredulous, I have been working here for 10 years, these are things that you don’t think can happen in your workplace, even if we know that unfortunately it happens. Maybe it can happen that you get hurt, get a shock because you work quickly: it’s not that. Instead, not coming home in the evening is a whole other story”. In the company, he adds, “there are many safety controls, certainly some things can be improved as in any workplace. No place is immune from risk. It is obvious that all the necessary considerations will be made. They had recently done some work, I don’t know what they installed. But we need to wait for the precise measurements. Such a big risk has never existed“, he assures.
