Couple in car in the Po, feminicide-suicide suspected in Cremona

No accident seems to have led to the death of Stefano del Re and his ex-partner, Lorena Vezzosi, who were found in Casalmaggiore inside a Nissan that crashed into the river. The hypothesis of feminicide-suicide is gaining ground among investigators

RIMINI – On Friday night they fell with the car into the Po, near Casalmaggiore, in the province of Cremona, never to return to their two children waiting unaware at home, about 200 kilometers away. Stefano Del ReandLorena Vezzosi, were recovered lifeless this morning, Saturday 6 July, before 8am, by the firefighters. They had been living in Santarcangelo di Romagna, in the Rimini area, for several years but they were originally from the province of Cremona, where they died, swallowed up by the waters of the great river. At first everything seemed to be attributable to an accident but, a few hours later, the reconstruction of the facts seems even worse: a feminicide is in fact hypothesized. Investigators are also investigating a murder-suicide. An autopsy has been ordered on the bodies and should be performed on Monday. There appear to be wounds to the legs on her body.

The investigators are therefore investigating feminicide and suicide: the relationship between the two has been in crisis recently. He is 53 years old, an Oss operator, she is 51 years old, a cleaner: they had moved from the province of Cremona to the Rimini area several years ago. They had recently been living apart: she at home withher two children aged 15 and 16, he in a nearby B&B. However, relations remained friendly, so much so that on Thursday evening they would go out to dinner together. What alerted the investigators to the hypothesis of femicide are the images from the surveillance cameras which recorded the car leaving the road and falling into the water. In fact, they show the helpless woman in the seats before the vehicle is swallowed up by the river, and then the man trying to save himself, perhaps driven by the survival instinct, clinging to a boat.

We are therefore working on examining the videos and testimonies acquired, even if the certainty of the hypothesis of a femicide, which will be clarified with the autopsy, is still lacking. The investigation, coordinated by the Cremona Public Prosecutor’s Office and managed in the field by the Cremonese Carabinieri in collaboration with their colleagues from Romagna, is however open with the hypothesis of a murder suicide. Del Re may have first killed his ex-partner, the mother of his two children and then decided to end it by driving the car off the road to let it fall into the Po with the two of them locked inside.
