ROME – A town known for its coltan deposits,a mineral used in smartphone batteries for electric cars, was occupied by a rebel group in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo : this was reported by a spokesperson for the armed formation. His reconstruction was confirmed by testimonies from representatives of civil society relaunched by multiple press sources.
The town is called Rubaya and is located in the province of North Kivu. The armed group is the Mouvement du 23 mars (M23), a formation that according to the Kinshasa government is supported by neighboring Rwanda.
Just yesterday the French presidentEmmanuel Macron had received the Congolese president Felix Tshisekedi in Paris. During the meeting, the French head of state made an appeal to Rwanda asking Kigali to “end its support” to the M23.
