Cinema in Piazza returns to Rome: all the programming
The event organized and promoted by the Piccolo America Foundation is ten years old and is for everyone: film buffs, children and football fans
ROME – ‘Il Cinema in Piazza’ returns to Rome until July 14th to celebrate its tenth edition in the three squares ofSan Cosimatoa Trastevere, of > Cervelletta Parkin Tor Sapienza and Monte Ciocci Parkin Valle Aurelia, up to the Cinema Troisi, which has become the fourth location of the event. After the success of the last edition, the event organized and promoted by the Piccolo America Foundation turns ten and celebrates this important anniversary by involving guests from all over the world. There will be 85 screenings, 22 special meetings, including 3 at the Cinema Troisi, and 12 retrospectives, for an edition ofEvery evening at 9.15pm, from Wednesday to Sunday, ‘ Cinema in Piazza’ brings a rich program of films in the original language with subtitles and Italian films with English subtitles to three locations in the city, with free entry – with the exception of special events at the Cinema Troisi.
THE GUESTS OF IL CINEMA IN PIAZZA
On 7 June the Palestinian director Maysaloun Hamoud, in dialogue with the Italian-Palestinian artist Laila Al Habash, < /strong>will present to the public of San Cosimato his powerful first work Free, disobedient, in love, which gives us the dualism and daily impossibility of three young Palestinian women in Tel Aviv in their fight for independence, and the price they have to pay for choosing to be free.
The American director and actor Edward Norton will be the protagonist of a double meeting on June 19: at 6.00 pm at the Cinema Troisi where, in dialogue with the journalist and critic Martina Barone, will present her directorial debut Motherless Brooklyn – The secrets of a city, and at 9.15pm in Piazza San Cosimato, on the occasion of the screening of the cult film Fight Club , which he will discuss together with the writer and critic Antonio Monda. Ari Aster, director and screenwriter already a guest in the 2023 edition, returns to‘Il Cinema in Piazza’ on July 5th to present his latest work Beau is Afraid, an epic odyssey into human paranoia. On Friday 12 July the director Francesco Zippel, in dialogue with the journalist Veronica Gentili, will present to the public of San Cosimato his homage to a legend of the world cinema, with his documentary Sergio Leone, the Italian who invented America.
On 24 June the French artist JR will introduce his documentary Tehachapi, presented at the Rome Film Festival in 2023, at Cinema Troisi , in which he talks about the artistic journey developed in a Californian prison and which involves the inmates and their families. Still without an Italian distribution, Tehachapi is currently making its entrance into French cinemas.
On June 28 there will be a special evening in collaboration with La Guarimba, an international short film festival born and active in Calabria, which deals with cinema and illustration by of culture a vehicle for promoting values of participatory democracy, integration, accessibility and respect for human rights. This year a selection of shorts from 2024 will be previewed at Il Cinema in Piazza in San Cosimato, introduced by a debate in which three social and cultural experiences – Scomodo, La Guarimba and Piccolo America – they will explore the theme of margins and their relationship with the idea of centre, in a dialogue on new forms of territorial marginality.
The international meetings continue at the Cervelletta on Sunday 23 June with the two Oscar winnersDamien Chazelle and Paolo Sorrentino in dialogue with the journalist and producer Malcom Pagani, followed by the screening of the film by American director La La Land; and again Alessandro Borghi and Luca Marinelli will meet the public to present The Eight Mountains by Felix Van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, winner of the David di Donatello 2023 as Best Film, moderated by the journalist Chiara Del Zanno on July 4th. The evening of July 11 will be dedicated to Akira Toriyama, legendary creator of the Dragon Ball universe with the screening of Dragon Ball Super – Broly by Tatsuya Nagamine.
On Saturday June 8th the film Shiva Baby with the actor and activist Pietro Turano will open in the square of Monte Ciocci strong> in dialogue with the director Emma Seligman, who will also be the protagonist of a meeting at the Cinema Troisi on 10 June, with the screening of her most recent film Bottoms, moderated by actress Lia Grieco. Saturday 22 June the director Kenneth Lonergan and the interpreter J. Smith-Cameron will present, for the first time on Italian screens, the extended version of Margaret by Kenneth Lonergan, a film with a troubled distribution history which earned the director 6 years of legal cases as well as a editing intervention by Martin Scorsese. The meeting will be moderated by the writer and critic Antonio Monda.
On Saturday 29 June a special screening of the film The Motorcycle Diaries, based on the diaries of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, leader of the Cuban revolution, will be introduced by the director Walter Salles >. The meetings continue in Monte Ciocci with the French director and screenwriter Céline Sciamma and her Portrait of a Lady on Fire and finally, on 13 July, the return of the beloved journalist and author of the podcast Indagini, Stefano Nazzi who will present Zodiac by David Fincher to the public.

The retrospectives: Canonero, Caligari and Carpignano
Among the many retrospectives scheduled, there is space for tributes to the incredible figures who have made the history of Italian cinema, starting with the most awarded Italian costume designer in the world, Milena Canonero, protagonist of Sundays in Trastevere. Starting from his first work, A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick, among others, Out of Africa by Sydney Pollack, Marie Antoinette will be screened by Sofia Coppola and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou by Wes Anderson. In over fifty years of activity Milena Canonero has won four Oscars out of nine nominations, the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement and then Bafta, David di Donatello and Nastri d’Argento.
A silent dialogue between the cinema of Claudio Caligari and Jonas Carpignano will take place on the San Cosimato screen every Wednesday. Distant in time but very close in their idea of cinema, the two filmographies trace a continuity between two directors who, in different ways and in two different moments, represent the urgency of conveying social problems in images and describing often forgotten places such as the suburbs – Ostia for Caligari and Rosarno for Carpignano – through the exploration and very personal reworking of the cinema of reality. From Caligari’s first film Amore Tossico, screened in a restored version created by the CSC – Cineteca Nazionale in collaboration with Surf Film, followed by L’odore della notte (restoration carried out by the CSC – Cineteca Nazionale, starting from the negatives made available by Minerva Pictures) up to the last Non be bad (distributed by Kimera Film), continuing withMediterranea, A Ciambraand To Chiara by Jonas Carpignano.
Carlo Verdone presents Citizen Kane. At the Cervelletta marathon Boris, the cinema of the Coen brothers and Frederick Wiseman
Thursdays in Piazza San Cosimato will be dedicated to Maestro Orson Welles, with a retrospective of his films. From Quarto Kane, presented by Carlo Verdone on 7 July in a meeting moderated by Alberto Crespi, to The Lady from Shanghai strong>, The infernal Quinlan and F for Fake, to rediscover and review the manifesto works of the director who was also an actor, writer, painter, playwright, producer, set designer, costume designer, editor: the total genius who, without ever sparing himself, established himself as one of the most influential filmmakers in the world.
Every Saturday evening, the cinema of the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen arrives at the Parco della Cervelletta, in a retrospective that includes titles such as Fargo, Barton Fink < /strong>andNo country for old men; alongside the homage to Frederick Wiseman, one of the greatest international documentarians, who with his great cinema was able to explore the most disparate areas of reality, conveying the complexities and ambiguities of contemporary America.
A special marathon of the cult television seriesBoriswill start every Sunday. Its four seasons will be screened entirely at the Cervelletta Park. With the first ten episodes, scheduled for the evening of June 9th, together with the cast, his fellow screenwriters Giacomo Ciarrapicoand Luca Vendruscolo and to the writer Francesco Pacifico, we will remember Mattia Torre, on the eve of his birthday.
James Franco presents Spring Breakers. At the Cervelletta exclusive screening of Aggro Dr1ft
Every Sunday in Monte Ciocci, Il Cinema in Piazza celebrates the French director, father of the Nouvelle Vague, Jean-Luc Godard, with his most beloved films such as < strong>Until the last breath, Contempt,Pierrot le Fou, Bande à Part; again in Monte Ciocci the work of one of the symbolic figures of contemporary American independent cinema Harmony Korine will be celebrated, with the screening on Wednesday 12 June of Spring Breakers, presented by the actor James Franco in dialogue with the journalist and translator Tiziana Lo Porto, and the iconic Gummo, Julien Donkey Boy, Mister Lonely and The Beach Bum. The opening evening of Cervelletta will also be dedicated to Korine, which will open on June 6th with the exclusive screening of his most recent work, Aggro Dr1ft. Written, directed and produced by the director and presented out of competition at the last Venice International Film Festival, the film is a hallucinatory tale that takes the viewer into the squalid criminal underbelly of Miami. Filmed entirely with thermal lenses, Aggro Dr1ft moves through a perverse world where violence and madness reign supreme. An unobtainable film, an extreme example of post-cinema, whose screening in Cervelletta will be a unique opportunity in Italy to see and love it on the big screen.
The review curated by Letterboxd, the retrospectives dedicated to D’Alò and Miyazaki, the adventure of the 2024 European Championships
A special collaboration with Letterboxd, the online community dedicated to cinema enthusiasts, will kick off a review of music documentaries in Monte Ciocci on Thursday evening. «We are happy to collaborate with a large international reality like Letterboxd, a globally known platform that has redefined the foundations for a new discussion and rediscovery of films from below, where reviews, lists and suggestions favor a new and freer cinema enjoyment. Inspired by the famous Four Favorites format, Letterboxd has selected four music documentaries for us such as Moonage Daydreamby Brett Morgen, which takes us into the life of David Bowie, Searching for Sugar Man by Malik Bendjelloul, the documentary that investigates the most unusual success in the history of music, that of the musician Sixto Rodriguez, The Last Waltz with the last live appearance of the group The Band documented by Martin Scorsese and the unrepeatable days of the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969 told from the unprecedented gaze of the musician Questlove inSummer Of Soul” as told by Alice Catucci andMariella Lazzarin, responsible of programming.
Like every year, there will be no shortage of events dedicated to the little ones thanks to the animated films by Enzo D’Alò in San Cosimato, by DreamWorks Animation in Monte Ciocci and a retrospective on the cinema ofHayao Miyazakiat the Cervelletta, sponsored by the Japanese Cultural Institute. All animated films will be screened in a dubbed version in Italian.
Furthermore, there will also be projections on the big screen of Italy’s matches at the European Championships, simultaneously in the two squares of Cervelletta and Monte Ciocci, starting from 15 June at 9.00 pm with the first Italy’s match against Albania, continuing with Italy-Spain on Thursday 20 June, Italy-Croatia on Monday 24 June, to reach the final on Sunday 14 July.
