BOLOGNA – After 16 years since their last meeting, which took place in 2008, today Chico Forti will see his mother again. It was his main wish, as he himself said upon his return to Italy on Saturday. “If I have kept myself like this it is because of my mother, I hope to hug her soon“. And also from America, even before the diplomatic operation of the Meloni government was successful which brought him back to Italy, he had said many times that his greatest hope was to hug his mother again.

Chico Forti is 65 years old (he spent the last 25 years in prison in Florida for a life sentence for the murder of Dale Pike, for which he declares his innocence), his mother (named Maria Loner Forti) is 96: the meeting between the two will take place in Trento, where the mother is located and is unable to travel for health reasons. Earlier today, the two had spoken on the phone on Saturday. To go and meet the woman, the former windsurfing champion obtained a permit from the judge and will leave todaythe Verona prison where he was transferred shortly after the return to Italy. Obtaining the permit in record time (granted by the supervisory court of Venice) sparked some controversy among prison unions, where the treatment reserved for Chico Forti was seen as preferential compared to other situations of detention.
The Fratelli parliamentarian Andrea Di Giuseppe, who has been closely following the Forti case for years, spoke of an “act of humanity”, explaining that it is an extraordinary permit lasting a few hours. These are his words: “Chico had last met his mother sixteen years ago, telling her that they would probably never see each other again. This woman, now 96 years old, has resisted until today just to hug her son again. I thank the judge of guarantee and the lawyers for the speed with which this permission was granted, an act of humanity”.
