The triumph of a comedy that tells the story of a contemporary 'Pretty Woman'. No prize for Sorrentino's 'Parthenope'

ROME – Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’ won the Palme d’Or for Best Film at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, which concluded this evening with the presentation of all the awards. The comedy is a trip to the strip clubs of a contemporary ‘Pretty Woman’ who, one day, meets the son of a Russian oligarch who offers her 15 thousand dollars for a week with him. When the two marry in a flash wedding in Las Vegas, a series of unfortunate events ensue.

Among the winners – and among the most applauded in this edition – there is also ‘Emilia Perez’ by Jacques Audiard, the film tells the story of a drug trafficker and his transition of gender, played by Karla Sofia Gascon: the first transgender actress awarded by Cannes. “I want this award to have a special part for all those actors and actresses who knock on doors every day and they don’t open. Well, know that sometimes those doors do open. And, of course,I dedicate this award to all trans people who suffer every fucking day from hatred and how they denigrate us“, said the actress with the award in her hands.

Italy returns home with the award for best director to Roberto Minervini in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section with the film ‘The Damned’. No prize for ‘Parthenope’ by Paolo Sorrentino, the only Italian film in Competition.
