ROME – Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival (14-25 May). The actress returns to the Croisette 35 years after winning the award for best actress for ‘A Cry in the Night’(‘Evil Angels’).
“I am immensely honoured, receiving an award at Cannes represents the highest achievement for the international community of artists“, declared the three-time Oscar winner. “Being in the shadow of those who have previously been honored humbles and excites me in equal measure. I can’t wait to come to France to thank everyone in person,” he concluded.
“There is something of Meryl Streep in all of us“, declared the leaders of the festival, Iris Knobloch and Thierry Fremaux. “We all have something of ‘Kramer vs. Kramer,’ ‘Sophie’s Choice,’ ‘Out of Africa,’ ‘The Bridges of Madison County,’ ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘Mamma Mia!’ because these films have spanned almost 50 years of cinema and she has embodied countless masterpieces. Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, of our shared love for cinema”, he concluded.
