Borghi’s provocation (Lega): “If sovereignty belongs to the EU, Mattarella should resign”. It’s controversial

BOLOGNA – A controversy breaks out on Republic Day. What is causing discussion is the tweet by Claudio Borghi, senator of the League, who launched a provocation against the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. The Northern League member, on X, made a post for June 2nd in which he negatively commented on the words spoken yesterday by President Mattarella. “Today the Sovereignty of our Nation is consecrated”, wrote Borghi, posting an image of a newspaper with a headline on Mattarella’s phrase according to which “sovereignty belongs to the European Union”. This is Borghi’s provocative comment: “If the President really thinks that Sovereignty belongs to the European Union instead of Italy, for consistency he should resign, because his function would no longer make sense”. Even more than Borghi’s post, the fact that Matteo Salvini, guest of the show ‘In half an hour’ on Rai Tre, resumed and relaunched the statement has caused discussion. Saying: “Today is the feast of Italians and of the Republic, not of European sovereignty. We have a President of the Republic because there is a Republic, an Italian national sovereignty”.

After the controversy, Borghi returns to intervene on the topic and does not retreat an inch. “Apparently the ‘More Europe’ fans wanted to celebrate the ‘consecration of the sovereignty of the European Union’ with Mattarella without anyone saying anything. I’m sorry for them but we are here in full legitimacy to ask the voters mandate for #PiùItaliaMenoEuropa“.

That this is seen as an outrage by the leader of the second majority party is alarming and worries that this position could be shared by Prime Minister Meloni who, at this point, must express clear words and must do so in Parliament. The next European elections will be played out precisely on this: between those who want +Europe like us in the United States of Europe, and those who want less Europe, like Salvini, Vannacci and Meloni. “The words of Lega senator Claudio Borghi close the circle of an attack on the figure of the President of the Republic which began with the legislature with a right-wing majority. The Premiership project is not enough, now the explicit attack passes for the request for the resignation of the person most representative of national unity and the spirit of cohesion. A very serious signal on Republic Day, Salvini, leader of the same party, and vice-premier, rather than covering up Borghi’s words, should condemn them without ambiguity”.
