ROME – Uncertain fate for the founder of the League, Umberto Bossi, after announcing, with the polls open, that his cross on the ballot paper would go with a different symbol, that of Forza Italia. During the opening press conference of the post-voting day, the secretary of the League Matteo Salvini, in commenting on the electoral outcome, returned to the rift with the former leader. We are a movement, he explains, which “manages to grow despite the fact that its founder announced when the polls were open that he was voting for another party, which is also curious, so – addressing reporters – I anticipate the question ‘what will you do'”.

“I don’t wish harm on anyone and I even named the book I wrote after Bossi, but I will certainly have to listen to the militants“. “It is clear and evident – he continues – that if someone says they vote for another party, they are disrespecting not so much the secretary but an entire community”, says the Northern League secretary. “I think ours is a more unique than rare case of a party which, faced with the founder declaring at open polls that he will vote for others, not only held but moved forward”.

The second point Salvini touched on with reporters is the electoral result of GeneralRoberto Vannacci, the independent candidate of the League. “I gave one of my three preferences to Vannacci together with two other militants”, he reveals. “He was so contested and reviled, but alone he got half a million preferences, and this too is strange: before it was a problem because it was said that he wouldn’t get votes, now it is because he gets too many.” Words from Matteo Salvini, who adds: “Yesterday I called him and congratulated him: a lasting journey together begins”.

So he sees the result of the vote as positive: “The League is above the result of the policies of two years ago.” Finally, a parenthesis on the hitch recorded in the counting in the Capital: “The results of a thousand sections in Rome are still missing, it is one of the mysteries of faith that, in the Capital, at 9.30 in the morning, there are still a thousand electoral sections of which there is no information news of its existence still alive, we probably need to review the organization for a moment”.

League that is growing in percentage compared to the policies and exceeds 2 million votes, government that is strengthening, General Vannacci with more than 500 thousand votes and sinister defeats almost everywhere in Europe.
