ROME – Chaos in Rome in the counting activities for the European elections. During the Mentana marathon on La7, the mayor of the capital Roberto Gualtieri spoke. “The IT incident ruined our afternoon – began the mayor -. I’ll explain what happened: from a legal point of view, the part we are dealing with has nothing to do with the process that leads from the ballot to the proclamation of those elected. Instead, we are talking about entering data to then be able to see it on the Ministry of the Interior website.
Purely informative activity which has no legal value: the proclamation of the candidates takes place several days later, when the signed and initialed minutes go to the court which counts them all and decrees who has been elected – Gualtieri clarified again -. Precisely because this process lasts days and citizens want to know immediately who has been elected, the data is typed on a site that allows everyone to read it.” Gualtieri then clarified the origin of the fault: “This circuit has experienced a very serious problem. During the night, the computer system that was supposed to take the data and transmit it to the Ministry of the Interior so that it could be made known presented a bug. Even though it was a new system, used for the first time, and tests had been carried out, at least according to what I’m told. I have asked for an internal investigation to ascertain any responsibilities.”
On the type of bug, Gualtieri specified that “when the data was digitized, the number of the desired seat did not appear but another one. This entry is therefore taking place now, we are a little less than halfway as far as preferences are concerned. I think that within a few hours the digitalisation of the emergency team will be completed. I apologize to everyone because it is a very serious incident, however, I repeat, it has nothing to do with the legal process that leads to the proclamation of those elected”, concluded Gualtieri.
