Bad weather, 10 million in Lombardy by 2024 to fight extreme events

The funds will be used to increase the quantity of draining green areas in cities, the presence of native tree species and the use of sustainable urban drainage solutions

MILAN – By the end of 2024, the Lombardy Region will open a 10 million euro tender aimed at Municipalities to increase the capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change of urban public areas, in particular in response to extreme events of temperature, precipitation or drought. The objective is to reduce polluting emissions and improve air quality, also “through interventions such as green roofs and walls, agricultural areas and urban forests, as well as cycle and navigable routes with environmental functions as well and water drainage”.
“We will finance in particular projects to de-waterproof the soil with the creation of new green infrastructures aimed at adapting to climate change and with the increase in green spaces and the planting of plant essences capable of promoting the absorption of CO2, with the aim of counteracting the effects of the heat island”, declared the Lombard regional councilor for the Environment and Climate Giorgio Maione, who explains how in recent days the council “is seeing how necessary it is to invest to increase the ability of urban centers to adapt to climate change”.

naturalistic engineering solutions will be favored to manage and recover water and thus mitigate the effects of temperature peaks, promoting respect for the environment through the use of ecological, recyclable materials and solutions eco-sustainable. “With de-waterproofing – concluded the councilor – the natural functions of the soil can be restored in the long term: a prerequisite for adapting to the climate crisis and for safeguarding the water balance”. The funds, therefore, will be used toincrease the quantity of draining green areas in cities, the presence of native tree species and the use of sustainable urban drainage solutions.
