Arrests in Liguria, Signorini’s lawyer: “He thinks he can explain, but not now”

The lawyer of Iren's CEO: "The papers require careful reading which cannot be done in prison"

ROME – “Signorini believes he can provide a whole series of explanations, but cannot do so now, after two days. This can hardly be done in a prison situation. Ten thousand must be read pages of documents. The documents require careful reading which cannot be done in prison. The priority is to clarify the precautionary measure”. Thus the lawyer Enrico Scopesi, defender of Paolo Emilio Signorini, at the end of the preliminary interrogation this morning in the Marassi prison. Signorini, arrested on charges of corruption as part of the maxi investigation which involved, among others, the governor Giovanni Toti, used the right not to respond.

Scopesi dribbled past the journalists who were waiting outside the prison, leaving from a secondary exit, only to then answer the phone to a reporter. At that point a group of journalists and operators formed around their colleague’s cell phone on speakerphone. The lawyer did not want to speak to the press in person again. Scopesi reiterates that Signorini “did not make any spontaneous declaration, but confirmed his willingness to speak with the public prosecutor at a later time, in a calmer context. Possible future availability was anticipated. Signorini is quite well, he is relatively calm in the context of the flood situation in which he finds himself.”

The lawyer adds that “there are so many disputes that must first be read and assimilated and verified, the context is broad. We cannot yet say that everything will be clarified, it is not an expression of mine or of his: it’s too early to know. It’s always a problem of interpretations: four years of interceptions extrapolated from contexts obviously need to be interpreted
