MILAN – Malpensa airport and its naming continue to cause discussion. Thousands of citizens mobilized online through dozens of online signature collections launched on Change.org, to oppose the choice, decided by the Lombardy Region, confirmed by ENAC and announced by the Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini, to dedicate the airport to Silvio Berlusconi. In fact, there are currently over 30,000 signatures collected around the topic, while among the alternative names, that of Luca Attanasio, Italian ambassador killed in Congo in February 2021, stands out. Its name was suggested by Gabriella Malfatto, a citizen who decided to mobilize on the petition platform as did Dagmar Mainardi.
A third petition against the naming of the airport after Silvio Berlusconi, launched by the Young Democrats of Lombardy, has collected almost 12,000 signatures. A fourth, launched yesterday and which has already collected 1,200 signatures, proposes instead to name the airport after Rosa Genoni: “Italian stylist, feminist, pacifist, journalist and founder of Made in Italy fashion was born on 16 June 1867 in Valtellina, in Tirano, in a family of humble origins, but of great and proud social dignity, has worked in a tailor’s shop in Milan since she was a child and then soon also abroad”. born in Milan; There are those who mention the name of Milanese Carla Fracci. Furthermore, the name of Alessandro Manzoni, “the most illustrious Milanese in our history”, stands out among the citizens’ proposals.
Some, for their part, put forward the name of Giacomo Matteotti, while others that of Enrico Fermi. The signatories of Malfatto’s appeal claim that “many remember the dedication and courage of Ambassador Luca Attanasio, a loyal servant of the State”, we read in the text of the online petition with 6,331 signatures. “We should honor the sacrifice by remembering his name appropriately by naming Milan Malpensa airport after him. On the contrary”, explains the promoter, “dedicating the airport to Silvio Berlusconi is a divisive decision to say the least. Although he has been a key figure in Italian politics for decades, many believe that his actions have sometimes been unclear, so much so that they have created legal problems and convictions for him”.
