BOLOGNA – The seven-year-old pit bull that yesterday bit the head and killed a five-month-old baby named Michele in the province of Vercelli has been seized. The Vercelli prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation and ordered the seizure of the animal, which will now have to be checked to assess its danger. The animal was transferred to a local kennel.
The tragedy happened late yesterday afternoon in Palazzolo Vercellese. According to what has been reconstructed, the child was in the arms of his grandmother, who had gone out into the courtyard to try to calm the crying child. The family dog suddenly attacked the woman, causing her to fall, then pounced on the child, biting him repeatedly in the back of the neck and on the skull. The dog is called Nero. The family owns two other dogs who were on the balcony at the time of the attack.
The neighbors told Corriere della Sera the chilling scene they found themselves faced with: the dog had the child’s head in its mouth and the grandmother was looking to protect him. It was the neighbor who intervened, with a broom and some bricks, to get the dog away from the grandmother. He picked up the little one, but the wounds were too serious.
